Of course the springs themselves have been here a lot longer than we have - almost 400 million years.

Since 1979 we've been protecting the small piece of land above our natural springs (also known as our catchment area). We look after this land to protect the water. No pesticides, pollution, farming, agricultural spraying, building or habitation is allowed anywhere in the 2000 acre area.

The result?
Our headquarters in Blackford, Perthshire, includes one of Europe’s most modern bottling plants - exporting Scotland's favourite water to over 50 countries worldwide.

Since 1979 we’ve invested more than £50 million in improving how we collect and bottle Highland Spring water, as well as in developing new products. This includes a £13 million extension to our plant and warehouse to double its capacity allowing us to satisfy the huge number of people drinking our water.

The purity of our water is everything to us, so we put most of our energy into looking after the area we draw our water from. We’re proud to say that the results of our efforts speak for themselves:

We are the UK’s leading supplier of bottled water

Our sparkling water is the UK's most popular

Highland Spring leads the way in doorstep deliveries

More kids drink Highland Spring than any other bottled water

Highland Spring is the number two bottled water brand in the UK

And we’re number one with the Soil Association as the first bottled water in the UK to have our land certified organic

And if that’s not enough...

In 2001 we enhanced our product range when we brought our Blackford neighbours, The Gleneagles Natural Mineral Water Company, under the Highland Spring Ltd umbrella. Gleneagles Natural Mineral Water is a beautifully packaged product which can now be found in the UK’s most exclusive venues.

In addition, we're committed to telling people about how good water is for you, whatever age you are. It is especially important that our younger generation learns the importance of drinking water and it’s for this reason we have created Highland Spring Kids water; designed to fit neatly into their lunchboxes.

</leftColumText>

      <leftColumText>

400 million years is quite a long time, but this is how long it takes to make one of the world’s finest spring waters. Our home, the ancient Ochil Hills, is formed from layers of red sandstone and basalt. Every drop of rain that falls on our land makes a 15 year long journey through this natural filter, trickling down through the heather and deep into the rock bed on its way to the source of Highland Spring.

Long before we started bottling water from the spring here in Blackford, our village was renowned for the quality of its water. In 1503 King James IV of Scotland issued a Royal Charter sanctioning Blackford Beer as his Coronation Ale. This fine brew used the water of the Ochil Hills and established the area as a leading source of pure unspoilt natural bottled water.

We started bottling the water in 1979 and the rest is history. The fact that we’re now the UK’s leading supplier of bottled water is testament to the fabulous natural production plant right beneath our feet in this beautiful corner of Scotland.

</leftColumText>

Travelling through the Ochil Hills you’ll see a small collection of buildings that we call home. However most of the real work is done deep beneath the surface of the protected 2000 acre catchment area that surrounds us. Once the water has spent 15 years making its way through heather, earth and rock, it arrives filtered and pure at the spring. This is where we take over; carefully bottling and shipping Highland Spring to our customers.

It rains a lot in the Ochil Hills, so there’s always a lot of water at the spring, and always a lot to do at our plant. We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week producing 90,000 bottles every hour. In 2006 we bottled around 240 million litres of water.

As part of our usual day to day activities, we’re committed to finding ways to improve what we do. Since 1979 we’ve spent more than £50 million in developing the plant and the brand. Some of the improvements are simple, and some more advanced – for example, we now operate a state-of-the-art bottle moulding facility on-site to make us that little bit more efficient.

The money we’ve spent on development has certainly paid off. Not only is our land now certified as organic but our total quality procedures have won us several Gold awards from the British Bottlers Institute.

</leftColumText>

On the surface, the Ochil Hills in Perthshire is an area of outstanding natural beauty. But as far as we’re concerned, far below the surface lies the real treasure. Beneath the undulating, heather-clad slopes, the hills are made of layers of red sandstone and basalt, which form a perfect natural filter for the fresh rainwater. As well as filtering the water, the 400 million year-old hills add goodness too. As the water passes through countless intricate cavities, it also absorbs many wholesome minerals.

It takes around 15 years for the water to complete its journey, from raindrop to natural underground spring, and finally it reaches the point 60m below the surface where we take over. We carefully draw the water up and bottle it at source, so every drop comes to you as pure as nature intended.

</leftColumText>

The environment.

(Look after the land and it’ll look after you.)

      <leftColumText>

This is our philosophy – to protect our environment and protect the fruit that it bears. It’s that simple. We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure our land is as natural as it can be.

The environment does not stop at the edges of our catchment area and neither does our care for it. In addition to the high degree of effort that goes into looking after our land, we have also been improving the way we work to be as efficient as possible.

As part of this focus we were the first bottled water producer to join EMAS – the voluntary eco-management and audit scheme. This scheme ensures that we follow a code of practice dedicated to meeting legal requirements. We do this and go far beyond what is required to ensure maximum protection for the environment.

This scheme is really important to us because environmental cause and effect is real – we are careful about what we may put into the environment in order to protect the quality of what we take out. When you live in towns and cities it’s often more difficult to see this happening. But if you consider the lifecycle of all the little drops of rain that fall on our land then perhaps the importance of caring for our world becomes a little clearer.

If you would like to read more about our environmental performance click here

</leftColumText>

    <subsection sTitle="faq">

Everything you wanted to know, and more.

xxx

      <leftColumText>

Why do we have an Environmental Management System (EMS)?

We're keen to raise awareness of, and effectively control, our possible impacts on the environment. An EMS helps us to do that.

It's important that we increase the understanding of environmental issues for everyone who works here. We do this using a training programme which is part of our Environmental Management System.

It's helps us as a business be more efficient - using the Environmental Management System means we can make savings for the company

Having a system like this in place helps us to focus on the requirements of environmental legislation.

What are the benefits of Environmental Management?

As much as possible we want to do the right thing, and we hope that having systems dedicated to improving our environmental management will help to increase confidence in Highland Spring, both for our customers and the people who work here. Furthermore, sound environmental management ensures we address - and where we can, exceed - the requirements of pertinent legislation. We also believe that a focus on the environment underscores the credibility of our Company: for consumers, the trade, and everyone working at Highland Spring, in the UK and abroad.

Why do we use "single trip" rather than returnable bottles?

Returnable bottles have to be robust and heavier to withstand the extra transportation and washing required of them, and as a result, more materials and energy are used in production of the bottle. In addition, when bottles are reused repeatedly they tend to scuff, which contributes to a weakening of the bottle (as well as detracting from its presentation).

Furthermore, it's difficult to collect a high return of bottle in returnable schemes. A more effective and comprehensive system of collection is kerbside collection where bottles can be collected at the same time as other household waste is collected. However, under UK legislation governing Spring Water, the water must be bottled at source. This means that all the bottles to be refilled would have to be returned from all over the UK to the main plant in Blackford. We consider the logistics of this to be environmentally unsuitable, as it takes more energy, or fuel, to return the bottle from our customers.

To maintain our high standards of hygiene and quality, we would have to employ rigorous cleaning of all returned bottles with hot caustic washes and copious amounts of rinses to ensure no taint was left in the bottle. The disposal of the cleaning solution would be an extra impact on the environment, as would the increased use of water.
Our belief is that bottles are more likely to be fit for purpose if they are "single trip" rather than returnable. By using single trip bottles we can use fewer materials in production, and by a process of light weighting we can use significantly less material to make both the glass and PET bottles. 348 Tonnes of PET were saved in 2006 due to reduced weight PET preforms. Glass bottles can be recycled and then incorporated into the glass for new bottles- this process uses less energy than making new glass.

Are bottles and packaging made from recycled materials?

Yes - the glass bottles can be made from up to 95% recycled glass. In 2007, Highland Spring will produce 12 million bottles containing 25% recycled PET. Other parts of our packaging are made from differing percentages of recycled material. For more information, see our Environmental Statement.

Are your bottles recyclable?

Yes - both our plastic (PET) and glass bottles can be recycled where facilities are available. Your local council should hold details of where they can be taken in your area. Glass bottles are recycled to form cullet, which can be used in a number of applications, including foundations for roads or, indeed, in the production of new glass bottles. PET is often made into other plastic products like strapping or film. In some cases it can be used for fibres to form clothes.

Where can the glass and plastic bottles be recycled?

Glass bottles are recycled in bottle banks, which can be found in supermarket car parks and council facilities. The infrastructure for the recycling of PET is slowly developing, including kerbside collection. Contact your local council for details of recycling facilities in your area.

What do the recycled symbols mean?

Every type of plastic is marked with a recycling symbol, which contains a number corresponding to the type of plastic and often shown with letters underneath with the shortened name of the plastic. There are seven of these symbols, each one with a different number corresponding to a different type of plastic.

The symbol which appears on our bottles, with the number '1' in a triangle, stands for Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE). This type of plastic is what the bottles are made from and is often used to make containers in the soft drinks industry. The caps on the plastic (PET) bottles are made from High-density polyethylene (HDPE), which uses the symbol number '2'. This type of plastic is used because it is more durable for use as a cap.

How is the catchment area protected?

Highland Spring water comes from a natural underground source far below the Ochil Hills in Perthshire, Scotland where no farming, agricultural spraying, building or habitation is permitted within the 2000 acre catchment area. The land has been maintained on an organic basis for over 20 years; that is, it has been kept free from pesticides and pollution since that time.

As a result, Highland Spring was the first British brand of bottled water to receive organic certification from the Soil Association for its catchment area.

How much salt is in Highland Spring?

The Food Standards Agency recommends that no more than 2.4g of sodium is consumed per day. This equates to a salt intake of no more than 6g per day, because sodium is present as sodium chloride in foods.

2.4g (grammes) is equivalent to 2400mg (milligrammes). Highland Spring has a 9mg of sodium per litre of water. So drinking 2 litres of Highland Spring will provide only 18 of the recommended daily intake of 2400mg: a very small proportion. Indeed, at this level, Highland Spring is suitable for individuals requiring a low sodium diet.

When checking sodium or salt levels in other foods remember to check whether mg or g are used so that an accurate comparison can be made.

What is the pH of Highland Spring?

This is a measure of acidity. Acids have low pH values and alkalis have high pH values. The range is from 1 - 14, with pH 7 being neutral.

The pH of still Highland Spring is approximately 7.8 which is slightly alkaline. As Highland Spring is a natural product the pH can vary slightly, but the range normally expected would be pH 7.6 - 8.0.

How much calcium is in Highland Spring?

Highland Spring is a low mineral content water, but our calcium level is approximately 40mg/l. The Food Standards Agency recommended daily intake is 700mg. Drinking 1 litre of Highland Spring will provide over 1/20th of your Recommended Daily Intake.

</leftColumText>

The Soil Association anticipates that organic sales in the UK will reach £3 billion by 2010, and with 39% of consumers preferring to drink bottled water sourced from organic land (NOP 2007), Highland Spring’s organic source is a key asset.

Bottled water remains one of the fastest growing and best performing soft drink categories - rising by 5.8% in 2006 (Zenith 2007).
Bottled water remains one of the fastest growing and best performing soft drink categories in the UK, worth £1.68 billion (2.28 billion litres), and accounting for 16% of soft drink sales. Since 2000 there have been 10 million new bottled water drinkers in the UK, and more than half the population (about 27 million adults) now drink over two billion litres of bottled water every year.

Bottled water sales in 2007 are expected to maintain the momentum achieved in previous years, with a predicted 7% growth pushing the industry towards the 2.4 billion litre mark. Growth is expected to continue at a rate of 6-7% year on year until 2011.

Highland Spring is a strong performer in the sector:

Consumer preference for Still (as opposed to Sparkling) bottled water is still evident, with 70% of consumers preferring Still most often (TGI Q1 2007). Much of the recent growth in bottled water has come from Still which accounts for 87% of sales, as consumers trade up to bigger packs for everyday use. Sports bottles and Kids' water continue to grow in popularity for on the move and lunchtime consumption.
Sparkling water maintains a good share of the market at 13% (almost 300 million litres). Also included are fun activity sheets for children to complete to help them understand the importance of water in their diet and in the environment.

Click here to download our Parents Pack or our Teachers Pack

Get fit, get water wise

Highland Spring encourages an active lifestyle and is committed to supporting sport at all levels from primary school children to elite athletes. We want to see more people participating in sport and enjoying the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle and are delighted to support a number of sporting activities such as the “Great Scottish Wee Walks” event. The “wee walks” take place all over Scotland with primary school children walking for their favourite charity or school project. Mums, Dads, Grannies and Granddads can join in too.

Highland Spring is also the official bottled water supplier to the Golf Foundation, supporting its Tri-Golf initiative which aims to develop and promote junior golf among primary aged children. At all of these events, Highland Spring keeps everyone refreshed by providing Highland Spring for Kids.

We will continue to champion healthier drinking habits for children - if you would like us to get involved in your local school or community sporting event, please visit our contact us page.

</leftColumText>

The Watercycle.

Water is a continuous cycle, powered by the sun.

Solar energy causes water to evaporate from our seas, lakes and rivers, returning it to the atmosphere as water vapour. Water vapour is also formed through transpiration; this is when groundwater is absorbed by plant roots, carried up to the leaves and released back into the air.

Cool air causes the water vapour to condense into lots of tiny droplets to form clouds. When the clouds get heavy, precipitation occurs as rain or snow. Most of the water that falls to earth through precipitation stays in the ground - slowly moving through the aquifers and eventually forming streambeds, springs and oceans, ready for the cycle to begin again. (An aquifer is a layer of rock, which can absorb a large quantity of water; it can do so because it is porous or because the rock is broken up with crevices that hold the water.)

About two-thirds of the Earth's surface is covered in water - some 97% of this occurs as salt water in the seas and oceans, more than half of the remaining fresh water exists as glaciers and ice caps, and a very small amount of fresh water occurs as lakes, rivers and groundwater. Groundwater accounts for 0.6% of the distribution of water on Earth.
